There are several historic sites in Syria which are popular tourist spots among the country’s visitors. Dubbed as the Cradle of Civilization, Syria has a lot of ruins and preserved historic sites which are products of the country’s rich historical background.

The Krac de Chevaliers (Fortress of the Knights) is one of the most famous tourist attractions and historical sites in Syria and is found outside Homs. It is a crusader castle built in the early 11th century which became a battle fortress for the different kingdoms that conquered and inhabited Syria. It is considered the most impenetrable of all the crusader castles found in the country. The Krac de Chevaliers is a mixture of the European and Middle Eastern military designs.

The Ummayyad Mosque in the city of Damascus was built in the 8th century and was used as a temple and cathedral during the early times. It was originally used by the Romans as their temple to Jupiter. During the Byzantine Empire, it became the Cathedral of John the Baptist and it is where St. John the Baptist’s tomb lies. When the Arabs came in the 17th century, the cathedral was made into a mosque.

The region of Palmyra is a desert area where ruins of the Roman Empire can be found. It was ruled by the renowned Queen Zenobia who stood against the Roman and Persian empires. Some of the UNESCO Heritage Sites include the ruins of the Valley of Tombs, the Hypogeum of the Three Brothers, the Monumental Arch, and the Great Temple of Bel.
