Medical facilities in Trinidad and Tobago may surprise those who are used to advanced equipment and services, for health facilities in the islands are very basic as compared to other countries. Despite this fact, private health care in Trinidad and Tobago is highly acceptable. However, the public facilities have several aspects that need improvement. As compared to Europe and North America, medical facilities in Tobago are very much limited but nonetheless, the services given in both hospitals and clinics are first class. More complex cases that require special procedures and medical attention are brought to Trinidad, where there are relatively bigger hospitals and better public and private health services.

Visitors from other countries do not necessarily have to take any specific vaccine shots or immunizations prior to entry. However, it is better to be safe with updated health boosters especially for Tetanus, Hepatitis A, and Yellow Fever when traveling to a tropical country.

For situations that call for medications, there are several pharmacies located on both islands. Some medications require that doctor's prescriptions be presented before purchase hence, it is important to bring such documents especially when traveling. For over-the-counter medications, there are virtually no problems. It is also recommended that visitors have medical insurance suitable for travel. This would ensure no complications, specifically in situations that require medical assistance.

Foreigners may not be used to the water on the islands, although it is potable, thus it is best to have a supply of bottled water. This precaution would alleviate the risk of having related health problems. Lastly, most visitors complain of insect bites and skin irritations. Hence, it is recommended that visitors have insect repellants or anything of the similar sort ready to avoid such trouble.
