History

History is a passageway to both knowledge and viewpoint. Without an understanding of the past, people are not able to profit from the experiences of their ancestors. History majors build skills in research, assembling evidence, making arguments, logical thinking and written and oral expression. Graduates that acquire these skills are well-placed for careers in a broad variety of fields, such as law, business, teaching, public service and the media. The History Department provides students with a wide variety of choices, including a minor and major in history and an honours major in history and literature. Suffolk University’s history department has strengths in the areas of European, African-American, American and Asian history, in addition to public history and the history of women and gender.
