Cambodian Mekong University is a private institution of higher education, founded in 2003 in Phnom Penh in Cambodia. The school is registered with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and offers undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and foundation programs in a variety of disciplines. The undergraduate department of Mekong university is divided into the following faculties: Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Foreign Languages, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Management and Tourism, Faculty of Science and Technology, and Faculty of Social Science.

The Kingdom of Cambodia, known unofficially as merely Cambodia, is a country located in Southeast Asia, encompassing nearly 70,000 square miles of total land area. The country is situated in the southern region of the Indochina Peninsula and shares borders with the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest, Thailand to the northwest, Vietnam to the east and Laos to the northeast. With a population approaching 15 million, Cambodia is the 69th most populous country in the world, and also one of the densest, with roughly 200 residents per every square mile. The capital and largest city in Cambodia is Phnom Penh, a city which is also the country’s political, cultural and economic center, and is home to the largest percentage of higher education institutions in the country.
Higher Education in Cambodia
The higher education system in Cambodia is very diverse and decentralized, falling under the direct supervision of eight parent ministries and one office. In total, there are 52 universities and other institutions of higher learning in Cambodia, twenty-one of which are publicly funded and the remaining thirty-one private. Only a few of the public universities in Cambodia are comprehensive institutions (schools offering a wide range of academic and professional programs). The remaining post-secondary schools at the public level tend to focus on just a few—and sometimes only one—discipline, a discipline closely related to the particular ministry which oversees it. On the other hand, all 31 private schools are at least moderately comprehensive and all fall under the direction of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. However, most of these private institutions, which may be operated by non-profit religious organizations as well as for-profit corporations, are responsible for developing their own curriculum (in accordance with government policies) and hiring their own faculty and staff.
The distribution of public universities, according to the parent ministry or agency under which they fall, breaks down as such: Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (7 institutions), Ministry of Labor and Technical-Vocational Education and Training (4), Ministry of Health (1), Ministry of Agriculture, Forest and Fishery (3), Ministry of Culture and Arts (1), Ministry of Economy and Finance (1), Ministry of Religious Affairs (1), Ministry of National Defense (2), Office of the Council of Ministers (1).
Most of the comprehensive universities, public and private, fall under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, including the country’s largest institution, the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP). Located in the nation’s capital, RUPP has been in operation since the winter of 1960. The university is known as the most prestigious in Cambodia, where students can earn undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate, and specialty degrees in a wide range of academic disciplines. RUPP is well known throughout Cambodia and beyond for its quality of instruction and facilities, and features, among other things, a National Institute of Judicial and Economic Studies, Royal School of Medicine, National School of Commerce, National Pedagogical Institute, Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences, and Faculty of Science and Technology.
The non-traditional higher education institutions, or those overseen by the various ministries other than Education, Youth and Sport, are significant in that they train Cambodian students to a fill a variety of career positions in fields that are very important to the Cambodian Economy, including agriculture, technology, fishery and defense.
