California Institute of the Arts se creó en los años 60, por Walt Disney. El centro imparte programas en música, arte, cine y vídeo, animación, teatro, guiñoles y escritura. Pone gran énfasis en arte interdisciplinario y contemporáneo. Su principal objetivo es conseguir artistas excepcionales, que darán gran contribución a su campo. California Institute of the Arts está organizado en los siguientes centros: Escuela de Arte, Escuela de Estudios Críticos, La Escuela de Danza Sharon Disney Lund, la Escuela de cine y Video, La Escuela de Música Herb Alpert y la Escuela de Teatro. El centro admite las solicitudes de los interesados, basado el el talento creativo de los mismos.

CalArts is also a full member of the National Association of Schools of Music, Dance, and Theater. The Institute's School of Art is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
