A F International School of Languages (AFI) is a small English language school in California with two campuses: Pasadena (744 E Walnut St), in the Greater Los Angeles area, and Thousand Oaks (3625 Thousand Oaks, Suite 130, Westlake Village). It has been teaching English for 23 years. AFI is SEVP-certified and can issue the Form I-20 for international students applying for an F-1 student visa.

  • Intensive ESL programme in five levels, 18 to 20 hours a week of grammar, conversation, listening and writing
  • Short-term ESL for visitors
  • English for Professionals and 50+ English
  • TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge FCE and CAE exam preparation
  • Private lessons and English for teens and companies

Each ESL level typically takes 12 to 16 weeks, and classes are kept small. Teachers of advanced and test preparation courses hold an M.A. in TESOL or higher. Applicants need a high school diploma, GED or CHSPE, must be at least 16 and need basic English. AFI has no residences of its own, but can refer students to local homestays, student apartments and short-term housing.

Admission Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED or a pass in the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE)
  • Minimum age 16
  • Basic English language skills
  • Application form, registration fee and photo ID (passport or US identification)
  • F-1 students: Financial Certification Form showing they can pay for tuition and living expenses

After receiving the Form I-20, F-1 applicants pay the SEVIS I-901 fee and apply for the visa at a US consulate.

Housing

AFI does not have its own residences or dormitories and takes no responsibility for student housing, but it can refer students to housing options near its campuses:

  • Homestay with an American host family through organisations such as Student International Housing, Universal Student Housing or Homestay Match
  • Shared or private rooms in student housing, for example from MBG Housing
  • Renting an apartment or room, with a list of rental websites on the school's housing page
