American University in Bulgaria

The American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) is an independent, not-for-profit university in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, about an hour's drive from Sofia. It offers an American-style liberal arts education, and its bachelor's degrees are accredited in both the United States and the European Union. The first classes began on 30 September 1991. In fall 2026 AUBG had 1,425 students, almost all undergraduates, from 43 nationalities, with 135 faculty members and an average class size of 22.

AUBG has student housing and has opened new wings of its Skaptopara III residence hall. The bachelor's application process is the same for Bulgarian and international applicants; for fall 2027 entry the deadlines are 15 January (priority), 15 March (early) and 15 May (regular admission). According to the university, 87% of bachelor's students receive scholarships.
