The Austrian Master Classes are international music courses held at Castle Zell an der Pram, a classicist castle built between 1771 and 1777 in the Innviertel region of Upper Austria. They were founded in 1979 by violinist Bruno Steinschaden, professor at the Mozarteum University, and have been run by Georg Steinschaden since 1994. According to the organisers, music students, performers and educators from 87 countries have taken part. Courses are open to all nationalities.
Each course lasts one week. The 2027 programme runs from March (Easter junior courses) to September and includes:
- Master classes for piano, violin, viola, cello, flute, voice and chamber music, for advanced students and professional musicians
- Junior courses (music camps) for children and teenagers in piano, strings, flute and chamber music
- Body and Voice, a supplementary course
Participants receive 40 or 80 minutes of individual or ensemble tuition a day, plus activities such as stage training, chamber orchestra for strings and lectures, and can perform in workshop and public final concerts. Every participant receives a certificate of participation. Accommodation and meals are generally provided in the castle, and free time on the junior courses is supervised.
