ASU Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS)

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), now ASU BIOS, is a marine research and education centre in Ferry Reach, St. George's, at the east end of Bermuda, on the edge of the Sargasso Sea. It began as a seasonal field station in 1903 and has been at its present site since 1932. BIOS is a unit of the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory at Arizona State University, and it is a US not-for-profit organisation and a registered Bermuda charity.

Research covers oceanography, marine biology, genetics, chemistry, biogeochemistry and climate change. BIOS runs the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS), the longest-running time series on seawater chemistry, biology and physics, and operates the research vessel R/V Atlantic Explorer. Bermuda's coral reefs, among the most northern in the world, are also studied here.

Courses and semester programmes are open to all and give field and laboratory experience in a subtropical marine environment. BIOS also runs the Ocean Academy and other programmes for Bermudian primary and secondary school students.
