Boston University Summer Term is the summer programme of Boston University, a private university founded in 1839 and accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. The campus lies in Boston's Back Bay neighbourhood along Commonwealth Avenue, and the university has more than 37,000 students from all 50 US states and over 150 countries.

Summer Term offers more than 600 courses in 70 subjects, taught by faculty from 12 of the university's 17 schools and colleges. Thanks to open enrolment and flexible schedules, it is open to undergraduate and graduate students, visiting students from other US and international universities, working adults and high school students. Rising 10th to 12th graders can choose one of four pre-college programmes:

• High School Honors: college courses for credit (up to 8 credits)
• RISE Internship/Practicum: STEM research in university labs
• Academic Immersion: one topic over three weeks
• Summer Challenge: two-week non-credit seminars

Teaching is in English, and visiting international students must submit TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test results before registering. Students enrolled in at least one six-week session can live on campus in traditional-style or apartment-style residences. Course and programme information for summer 2027 is published on 17 December.

Summer Term offers more than 600 college courses in 70 subjects. For high school students there are four pre-college programmes (2027 dates are tentative):

• High School Honors: more than 80 college courses for credit, for rising juniors and seniors; 6 weeks, 27 June to 6 August 2027; residential, commuter or online
• RISE Internship/Practicum: university-level STEM research in a lab, for rising seniors; residential or commuter
• Academic Immersion: one topic over three weeks; 27 June to 16 July or 18 July to 6 August 2027
• Summer Challenge: two seminars over two weeks, for rising sophomores, juniors and seniors; three sessions between 20 June and 6 August 2027

Teaching is in English. Visiting international students must submit one of the following before Summer Term registration:

• TOEFL iBT: at least 84 (or 4.5 on the new scale from January 2026)
• IELTS: at least 7
• Duolingo English Test: at least 115

Exempt are students currently at a US college or university, students whose home institution teaches mainly in English, and native English speakers. Students below the minimum are referred to BU's Center for English Language & Orientation Programs (CELOP).

Summer tuition depends on the number of credits, the course level (undergraduate or graduate) and the school or college offering the course. As an example, in summer 2026 a four-credit undergraduate course cost US$3,380 in tuition. Rates for summer 2027 had not yet been set at the time of checking; preliminary rates are announced on 17 December.

Summer Term students registered for at least one six-week session can live on campus in traditional-style or apartment-style residences. Rooms are furnished, but students bring their own pillow and linens; apartments also have a kitchen and bathroom. Applications go through the BU Housing website and places are assigned on a space-available basis; visiting international students receive instructions by email after registering for courses. Residents of traditional-style halls must take one of three summer dining plans. Pre-college students living on campus share rooms in university residence halls, typically two or three per room.
