Bowie State University (BSU) is a historically Black university in Bowie, Maryland, located between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. Founded in 1865, it is the oldest HBCU in Maryland and a member of the University System of Maryland. Its campus covers 300 wooded suburban acres and has seven residence halls. In 2025 it received the "Research College and University" designation in the Carnegie Classification, and the university reports that U.S. News & World Report 2026 ranks it among the top 20 HBCUs.

BSU offers more than 30 undergraduate majors, 21 master's programmes, 16 certificates and three doctoral programmes, with a focus on science, technology, business, education and related fields; graduate study includes cybersecurity, counselling and computer science. Evening classes and online courses are also available.

There is no separate international application: international students choose the freshman, transfer or graduate application and indicate "Student Visa" in the citizenship section. The Office of International Education & Student Services helps admitted students with the I-20 form needed for an F-1 visa. Applicants whose native language or language of instruction is not English must show English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo).
