California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) is a public university on a 375-acre campus in Bakersfield, in California's southern San Joaquin Valley, with a second site, CSUB Antelope Valley. It serves more than 10,000 students, is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) and is a designated Hispanic Serving Institution. It is the only public university within nearly 100 miles.
CSUB offers 57 undergraduate and graduate programmes in four colleges:
- Arts and Humanities
- Business and Public Administration
- Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering
- Social Sciences and Education
Graduate options include an MBA, a Master of Social Work, a Master of Public Administration and a doctorate in educational leadership (Ed.D.). The campus has more than 100 student organisations.
International students apply through Cal State Apply with a US$70 fee. Freshmen need a minimum GPA of 2.5 and proof of English, such as IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL iBT 61. For 2026-2027, non-resident undergraduates pay US$471 per unit in non-resident tuition (US$11,304 a year for 12 units per semester) on top of the systemwide tuition fee and campus fees.

International undergraduates apply online through Cal State Apply (US$70 fee) and submit:
- A copy of their passport
- The International Student Health Insurance Agreement Form
- The CSUB Affidavit of Financial Support
- A bank statement in English, from the last six months, showing at least US$38,956 in liquid funds
- Official transcripts in English; freshmen need a minimum GPA of 2.5 and transfer students 2.4, and foreign university transcripts need a course-by-course evaluation by a NACES member (e.g. WES)
- Proof of English proficiency
Undergraduate minimum scores:
- IELTS: 5.5, with at least 5.5 in each section
- TOEFL iBT: 61
- Duolingo English Test: 95
- PTE: 43
- SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing: 550
- A college-level English course with a C or higher (not online)
Graduate applicants need IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80, Duolingo 105 or PTE 58. Students from a list of English-speaking countries may receive a waiver.
Estimated costs for non-California residents, 2026-2027 academic year (full-time undergraduates):
- Non-resident tuition: US$11,304 (US$471 per unit, based on 12 units per semester)
- Systemwide tuition fee: US$6,838
- Mandatory campus fees: US$2,105
- Total budget including on-campus housing, food, books and personal costs: US$43,243
Graduate students pay US$471 per unit in non-resident tuition plus a systemwide fee of US$4,960 (MBA: an additional US$321 per unit). CSU fees are estimates and may change.
