California State University, Monterey Bay (Cal State Monterey Bay, CSUMB) was established in 1994 and is part of the California State University (CSU) system. It is on the central coast of California (United States), one mile from the Pacific Ocean, with its address in Seaside. More than 4,000 students live on campus.
CSUMB offers more than 80 undergraduate majors, minors and concentrations and a range of master's degrees, graduate certificates and teaching credentials, in areas such as business, education, human services, technology, and health and environmental sciences.
International students apply through Cal State Apply ($70 fee) as undergraduates or graduate students; those who do not yet meet the English requirement can receive conditional admission. Visiting students can spend one or two semesters at CSUMB (Semester @ CSUMB) or come through the National Student Exchange. International scholarships for high-achieving students help waive the non-resident part of tuition, and the International Programs office helps admitted students with immigration forms and travel.

Admission
International applicants apply through Cal State Apply (application fee $70). First-year requirements:
- The equivalent of a 2.40 GPA (4.0 scale) in high school and a high school diploma or equivalent
- National test scores if required in the home country; SAT/ACT optional (required for graduates of US or US-accredited high schools)
- English proficiency
- Scanned passport photo page and proof of funding (financial affidavit)
Transfer students need a minimum 2.0 GPA in transferable credits; foreign university transcripts are evaluated by WES, SpanTran, ECE or IERF. Graduate applicants meet programme-specific criteria. Students who do not yet meet the English requirement may receive conditional admission.
Deadlines
Undergraduate international applicants, spring 2027 (tentative dates; rolling admission):
- Priority application: 1 October 2026
- Final application deadline: 1 November 2026
- Final documents and enrolment confirmation payment: 1 December 2026
Graduate international applicants, fall 2027: applications open on 1 August 2026; deadlines vary by programme, for example 1 February 2027 (Environmental Science, Marine Science, Social Work), 1 March 2027 (Education with credentials, Nursing) and 31 May 2027 (Computer Science).
Scholarships and financial aid
CSUMB offers international scholarships for high-achieving students, which help waive the non-resident portion of tuition. Students apply for them after applying for admission.
Housing
More than 4,000 students live on campus in over 25 residential buildings and communities on the main and east campuses, from first-year residence halls to apartments for upper-level students. Gavilan Hall is the newest building. International students are among those required to live on campus. Residents have access to the Dining Commons and campus cafes.
