More than 80 undergraduate majors across ten schools, some leading on to master's and doctoral degrees. The most popular majors include nursing, biology, psychology, business, pharmacy, mechanical engineering, political science, health sciences, finance and physical therapy. An accelerated Second-Degree Nursing programme (12 to 16 months) is available for students who already hold a bachelor's degree, and research opportunities begin in the first year.
More than 125 graduate, master's and professional programmes, on campus in Pittsburgh or partly or fully online, in the schools of business, education, health sciences, law, liberal arts, medicine, music, nursing, pharmacy and science. Micro-credentials, certificates and continuing education are also offered. Graduate applicants ask their school directly about funding.
International first-year applicants need a secondary school diploma equivalent to a U.S. high school, generally with the equivalent of a 3.0 GPA for most majors (applicants are compared with students from the same country). Documents:
- Online application
- Official academic records from the last four years, in the original language with certified English translations
- At least one recommendation letter
- Personal statement of at least 300 words
- English test scores, or testing on arrival
A decision takes about two to three weeks after the application is complete; interviews are optional.
International undergraduates can either submit a TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson Test of English or Duolingo English Test result, or a score of 540 or higher on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section, or take an English test on arrival on campus.
Accepted international undergraduates are automatically considered for the merit-based Libermann Scholarship, usually US$10,000 to US$30,000 per academic year, renewable for four years. Full scholarships and financial aid are not available to international students. The School of Music awards talent scholarships by audition, and athletic scholarships are given for NCAA sports. Students in F-1 or J-1 status may work on campus for less than 20 hours a week.
First-year and second-year undergraduates must live on campus unless granted a waiver; about two-thirds of full-time undergraduates live in the seven Living Learning Communities, which include suite, apartment-style and single rooms. Most upper-year and graduate students live off campus, for example in Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, South Side, Oakland or Bloomfield (15 minutes or less by bus). New international students can book a temporary campus room before orientation or start with a homestay.
