Eastern Illinois University (EIU) is a public university in Charleston, Illinois (United States), founded in 1895, with a 320-acre residential campus and 8,857 students. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and offers bachelor's, master's and specialist degrees.

Teaching is organised in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Lumpkin College of Business and Technology, the College of Education and the College of Health and Human Services, plus a Graduate School and an Honors College. EIU offers more than 100 majors, minors and programmes; popular fields include health, business, education, psychology and recreation/sports. More than 40 programmes can be taken online.

The Office of International Students and Scholars handles admission, visas (F-1 and J-1) and orientation for international students. International undergraduates pay 1.25 times the domestic tuition rate, and all new first-year and transfer international undergraduates are eligible for a scholarship of US$1,000 per semester. On campus there are residence halls, Greek Court and two apartment complexes, University Court and University Apartments.

Master's and specialist degrees and post-baccalaureate certificates through the Graduate School, including online master's programmes. Some graduate programmes have earlier application deadlines than the general ones. Graduate assistantships are available.

Admission Requirements

International students apply online through the MyEIU portal and submit a Financial Affidavit; students already in the United States also submit a transfer-in form. Applicants must show funds for one academic year (two semesters); this amount appears on the Form I-20 or DS-2019. Conditional admission is available for undergraduate and graduate applicants. EIU admits students for autumn (mid-August) and spring (mid-January) semesters.

Fees

Undergraduate costs for the 2026-27 academic year (30 credit hours): tuition US$10,690.20 (US$356.34 per credit hour), student fees US$4,224 and food and housing (All Access Plan) US$13,670. International undergraduates pay tuition at 1.25 times the domestic rate, plus an International Student Fee of US$230 per academic year. Undergraduates admitted with a GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) can be charged the in-state rate through the International Excellence Awards.

Financial Aid

  • International Scholar Awards: US$1,000 per autumn and spring semester for all new first-year and transfer international undergraduates (up to US$8,000 over four years for first-year students), with no minimum GPA
  • International Student Scholarship: partial tuition, based on financial need and/or academic merit; minimum GPA 3.00 (undergraduate) or 3.25 (graduate)
  • International Excellence Awards: in-state tuition for undergraduates admitted with a 3.5 GPA
  • Scholarships for current international students, such as the Carl Koerner Memorial and Eulalee L. Anderson scholarships
  • Graduate assistantships

Housing

On-campus housing includes residence halls, Greek Court and two apartment complexes, University Court and University Apartments. Residential Learning Communities group students with shared interests. Students apply for housing through the MyEIU portal.
