Higher education centre in Gijón, Spain

The Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático del Principado de Asturias (ESAD Asturias) is a higher drama school in Gijón, in the north wing of the Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura complex. It grew out of the Instituto del Teatro y de las Artes Escénicas (ITAE), created in 1985; the school itself was established by a decree of the regional Consejería de Educación y Cultura in 2002 and began teaching in 2003-04. Since 2006 it has occupied more than 5,000 square metres at La Laboral.

Studies last four years and lead to the Título Superior de Arte Dramático, equivalent for all purposes to a university bachelor's degree. Since 2010-11 they follow the Bologna structure in ECTS credits. Two specialities are offered:

  • Interpretación (acting)
  • Dirección y Dramaturgia (directing and playwriting)

Admission is through a specific entrance test, announced each year in the regional official bulletin (BOPA). The school has rooms for acting, movement, voice, music and make-up, IT and audiovisual rooms and a library and media centre. It holds the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education and runs mobility for students, teachers and staff.
