The Escuela Superior de Diseño de Madrid (ESD Madrid) is a public centre of the Dirección General de Enseñanzas Artísticas of the Comunidad de Madrid. It offers official public higher education in design at bachelor's (Grado) and postgraduate level within the European Higher Education Area, and belongs to the region's network of public higher arts centres. Around 800 students study at the school, with an average student/teacher ratio of 20 to 1.

The Grado en Enseñanzas Artísticas Superiores de Diseño is an official four-year course taught in person and starting in September; the published Graphic Design plan carries 240 ECTS credits. The first year is common to all specialities, optional subjects start in the second year and work placements are compulsory in the final year. Four specialities are offered:

  • Graphic Design
  • Interior Design
  • Fashion Design
  • Product Design

The school also offers two official master's degrees, in Interactive Design and in Commercial Space Design. Admission to the Grado is by entrance test (prueba de acceso) or, for holders of the Técnico Superior de Artes Plásticas y Diseño, by direct access. ESD Madrid takes part in Erasmus mobility for studies and traineeships, receives exchange students from partner institutions each year and has been a member of the Cumulus association since 2016.

Grado en Enseñanzas Artísticas Superiores de Diseño, an official four-year degree, in four specialities:

  • Graphic Design
  • Interior Design
  • Fashion Design
  • Product Design

The first year is common to all specialities and optional subjects start in the second year. In the Graphic Design plan (240 ECTS), the fourth year includes 12 ECTS of work placements and a 12 ECTS final project (Trabajo Fin de Grado).

Admission Requirements

Two routes lead into the Grado:

  • Entrance test (prueba de acceso): open to holders of the Bachillerato or equivalent (or students completing it that year), a higher arts qualification, a university degree, a Técnico Superior qualification, or the university entrance exam for over-25s
  • Direct access: holders of the Técnico Superior de Artes Plásticas y Diseño, with 15% of new places reserved

Applicants with foreign studies need a qualification declared equivalent or officially recognised (homologación).
