The Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS) is an intensive academic programme run by Freie Universität Berlin. Students earn credits that may count towards their degree at their home institution. Sessions last three to six weeks and take place in winter and summer; in 2027 the terms run from 4 to 22 January, from 29 May to 10 July and from 17 July to 14 August.

FUBiS offers more than 60 courses a year. Students can choose from:

Intensive or semi-intensive German classes, on up to five levels
Subject classes, taught mostly in English by German and international faculty
A combination of a language class and a subject class (Terms II and III)
Two subject classes that may count towards a major or minor (Terms II and III)

Classes have at most 18 participants (15 in language courses), and study trips to museums, memorials and political and cultural institutions in Berlin are part of the curriculum. FUBiS has completed the Quality Improvement Program (QUIP) of the Forum on Education Abroad. Participants receive a student ID of the university, and housing can be booked through the programme, including single rooms in shared apartments and homestays.

Admission

Students must be at least 18 years of age and should have completed at least one year of higher education (college or university) at the beginning of the FUBiS program. However, registrants to the FUBiS program do not have to be enrolled in any program at the point of their registration. FUBiS also accepts registrations by adult learners and professionals. Please note that credits can only be awarded if you are currently / have been enrolled at a university.

Fees

2027 terms: a non-refundable program fee of €425 is charged in addition to tuition (it may vary for selected courses), with a €75 discount for early registration. Tuition for a semi-intensive German class is €1,475 or €1,975 depending on the term; other tuition fees are listed in the course syllabi. Tuition includes course-related field work and the course reader.

Term II 2027 (29 May to 10 July 2027): register by 1 May 2027; early discount until 3 April 2027
Term III 2027 (17 July to 14 August 2027): register by 19 June 2027; early discount until 22 May 2027
