Instituto Universitario Ortega-Marañón

Higher education centre, Graduate school in Madrid, Spain

The Instituto Universitario de Investigación Ortega y Marañón in Madrid is the postgraduate and research institute of the Fundación José Ortega y Gasset-Gregorio Marañón (FOM), a non-profit foundation. The institute has been an affiliated centre (centro adscrito) of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid since 1986. The foundation was formed in 2010 by the merger of the José Ortega y Gasset and Gregorio Marañón foundations, set up in 1978 and 1988.

The foundation works in the social sciences, the humanities and the health sciences. Its activities include:

  • Postgraduate programmes of the university institute
  • A study abroad centre offering university teaching for international students
  • Training courses for teachers of Spanish, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes
  • Instituto Cervantes exams
  • Applied research, consultancy and development cooperation projects

All postgraduate teaching takes place at the foundation's centre on calle Colegiata in central Madrid; its main seat is at Fortuny 53. In Toledo, the foundation uses a restored 16th-century Mudéjar convent in the old town, which also serves as a student residence, for courses and activities for international students. The foundation also runs the Centro de Estudios Orteguianos, created in 1997, and publishes the Revista de Occidente, founded by Ortega y Gasset in 1923.
