IIK Göttingen e.V. - German Summer and Erasmus Courses

The International Summer Course in Göttingen is one of the German courses for international students, employees and visiting scholars offered by the Institut für Interkulturelle Kommunikation (IIK Göttingen e.V.) at the University of Göttingen. Classes are held face to face on the university campus and are open to anyone aged 16 or over, whether or not they study or work at the university.

Each course covers one CEFR half-level, from A1.1 (complete beginners) to C1.1 or C1.2, in groups of 5 to 15 participants, taught by lecturers who also teach at the university. Students who complete a course receive a certificate with 6 ECTS credits, which can be recognised at the University of Göttingen. Formats include:

International Summer Course in August, with 80 morning lessons plus day trips and optional language tutorials
Intensive courses during the lecture-free period
Evening courses twice a week
Courses on request for groups of six or more

Language requirements

No prior German is required: courses are offered for every CEFR half-level from A1.1 (beginners without previous knowledge) to C1. Each course covers one half-level, and groups of 5 to 15 participants are formed by level. In the August 2026 intensive session, for example, the half-levels A1.1, A1.2, A2.1, A2.2, B1.1, B1.2, B2.1 and C1.1 are offered.

Course fees for 2026:

International Summer Course, 3-28 August 2026 (80 lessons): €750, including course books and the supporting programme; discounts for students and staff of the University of Göttingen
Intensive course, 3-28 August 2026 (80 lessons): €495
Intensive B2 course, 10 August-18 September 2026 (150 lessons): €899
Intensive course, 2-22 September 2026 (75 lessons): €475
Evening courses: €330 (48 lessons) or €495 (72 lessons) per half-level

Booking a whole level (A1, A2 or C1) from 3 August to 22 September 2026 costs €899.

Scholarships and financial aid

20 partial grants for students from Central Eastern Europe /Eastern Europe /Central Asia: They can apply for a grant of € 150 (euro). This means they have to pay only € 475 instead of € 625. Please email your application (letter and resume) to: [email protected] DAAD grants for students from all countries: The "Deutscher Akademischer Auslandsdienst" (DAAD) awards scholarships which usually cover the complete course fee plus some flat-rate travel allowance. Housing

Upon request we will arrange housing for you in a plain single bedroom in a student dormitory. A room in a student residence costs € 195.

Services and activities

The language course alone consists of a total of 72 lessons (each 45 minutes long). Lessons take place Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 10:30 and from 11:00 to 12:30. These 72 lessons are compulsory for all participants who want to gain a certificate in the end of the course. In the afternoons, participants can join optional tutorials to further practise their speaking, writing and pronunciation skills (in a playful manner): - Conversation (4 x 2 lessons, five different levels for basic to advanced level) - Creative Writing (4 x 2 lessons, two different groups: basic level and intermediate & advanced level) - Phonetics in Song (4 x 2 lessons) In the afternoons and evenings, Monday to Friday, cultural and social events take place: such as film evenings, sport events, cooking aktivities, folklore dances or a guided town walk. Participants can present their home countries on so-called “international cultural evenings”. There will also be hike> to a look-out tower and a picnic and sports festival afterwards. Furthermore, we will go on three excursions to various points of interest in the further vicinity.
