Mount St. Mary's University is a private, liberal arts, Catholic university founded in 1808 in the Catoctin Mountains near Emmitsburg, Maryland, between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. It also has a campus for adult students in Frederick. According to the university, it is the oldest independent Catholic university in the United States, and its seminary is the second oldest Catholic seminary in the country. 85% of faculty hold a doctorate or terminal degree.

For traditional undergraduates it offers more than 80 majors, minors, concentrations and special programmes across its College of Liberal Arts and schools of business, education, health professions and science, with study abroad opportunities. More than 25 adult undergraduate and graduate programmes, including MBA, physician assistant and education degrees, are taught online and in the evening in Frederick.

International students apply with a free online application, a WES course-by-course evaluation and an English test, and receive an I-20 after admission and enrolment deposit. For 2026-27, full-time undergraduate tuition is US$50,000 a year. Nearly seven in ten students live on campus in residence halls, suites, apartments or cottages.

Language Requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English need one of: TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5, PTE 55, Duolingo 105, Cambridge C1 Advanced, iTEP 4.5, SAT 530 or ACT English 18.

Fees

Undergraduate costs for the 2026-27 academic year (effective 1 July 2026, subject to change):

  • Full-time tuition: US$50,000 per year (12 to 16 credit hours per semester)

Housing

Nearly seven out of ten students live on campus, in traditional residence halls, suite-style housing, apartments or the University Cottages. Rooms have an extra-long twin bed, desk, dresser and wardrobe for each student. First-year students live in halls such as Pangborn (all-female) and Sheridan (coed by floor), each with about 150 first-year residents.
