The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is a public research university in the University Heights district of downtown Newark, New Jersey (United States), about 20 minutes from Manhattan by train. It has more than 11,900 undergraduate and graduate students and holds the Carnegie R1 classification for research. According to the university, U.S. News & World Report ranks it among the top 40 public universities in the country.
NJIT offers more than 125 bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes through six schools:
- Newark College of Engineering
- Ying Wu College of Computing
- Jordan Hu College of Science and Liberal Arts
- Hillier College of Architecture and Design
- Martin Tuchman School of Management
- Albert Dorman Honors College
Programmes are accredited by bodies such as ABET (engineering), AACSB (business) and NAAB (architecture). Students can take part in internships, cooperative education (co-op) and study abroad. International students apply on a rolling basis, with final cut-off dates each semester. More than 2,000 students live in four residence halls on campus.

First-year international applicants apply through the Common App (transfer students through njit.edu/apply) and pay a non-refundable US$75 application fee. They send an official secondary school transcript in English (or a notarised copy) and an English test score; SAT/ACT scores are optional for fall 2026 entry except for the Albert Dorman Honors College and accelerated programmes. Architecture and design applicants submit a portfolio. Transfer students need a WES or NACES transcript evaluation and at least 15 semester hours of college credit.
Graduate applicants send an English test score, recommendation letters (three for a PhD) and GRE/GMAT scores where their college requires them. Admission is rolling, with final cut-off dates: 1 March (fall) and 15 October (spring) for undergraduates, 1 May (fall) and 15 November (spring) for graduate students. NJIT advises starting at least six months before the semester.
Applicants whose first language is not English must submit one of these minimum scores:
- Undergraduate: TOEFL iBT 79 (4.0 on the new scale), IELTS 6.0, Duolingo 100, PTE 53
- Graduate: TOEFL iBT 79 (4.0 on the new scale), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 120, PTE 57
Applicants with degrees from institutions in listed English-speaking countries are exempt.
Estimated cost of attendance for international students, 2026-27 academic year (two full-time semesters):
- Undergraduate (12-17 credits): tuition and fees US$42,300; living expenses US$18,900; other expenses (health insurance, books, etc.) US$10,678; total US$71,878
- Graduate (9 credits): tuition and fees US$42,534; living expenses US$18,900; other expenses US$9,978; total US$71,412
NJIT has four residence halls on its Newark campus, home to more than 2,000 students, including about half of the first-year class. Resident and commuter students can choose from several meal plans. The university's cost of attendance for 2026-27 puts housing and food on campus at US$18,900 per year.
