It opened in 1925 as a state normal school for teachers and took its current name in 2001. According to the university, more than 8,700 students from over 30 states and 60 foreign countries study on a campus of more than 200 acres, with a 14:1 student-faculty ratio.

SU offers over 40 undergraduate and nearly 20 graduate degree programmes, including two doctorates, across the Perdue School of Business, the Henson School of Science and Technology, the Fulton School of Liberal Arts, the Seidel School of Education and the College of Health and Human Services, plus an Honors College. Its English Language Institute has taught international students since 2010.
