San José State University (SJSU) is a public university in San José, California, in Silicon Valley, and part of the California State University (CSU) system. Founded in 1857 as the first State Normal School in California, a teacher-training college, it is now a comprehensive university and describes itself as the largest public university in Silicon Valley. It is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
SJSU offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programmes across its colleges, among them:

International applicants who need an F-1 visa apply as international first-year or transfer students, and must prove English proficiency with TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo. Students can live in residence halls or downtown apartments, or in the International House, a residence for 70 US and international students near campus. International first-year applicants (residents of another country who need an F-1 visa to study for a bachelor's degree) apply online through Cal State Apply. They must first meet the CSU eligibility requirements and are then reviewed in SJSU's selection process for impacted programmes (impaction). Applicants studying outside the United States must also submit an official English test score, and international applicants must provide financial documents to complete the application. Separate routes exist for international transfer students and for graduate applicants holding a bachelor's degree.
Undergraduate minimum English scores (score reports must be under two years old):
- TOEFL iBT (1-6 scale from 21 January 2026): 3.5, or 4 for Engineering majors (61 and 80 on the old 0-120 scale)
- IELTS: 6.0, or 6.5 for Engineering
- PTE: 44, or 53 for Engineering
- Duolingo: 95
Exemptions apply, for example after at least three years of full-time study at an institution where English is the main language of instruction.
SJSU offers several housing options, from traditional and suite-style residence halls to Greek houses and downtown city apartments. Rates include basic utilities and WiFi, and a meal plan is required in the traditional and suite-style halls. The International House is a mixed residence for 70 US and international students, a short walk from campus. University Housing Services also provides resources for finding off-campus housing.
