Santa Clara University (SCU) is a Jesuit Catholic university founded in 1851 in Santa Clara, California, in Silicon Valley. Its campus covers 106 acres. In fall 2025 it had 6,695 undergraduate and 3,128 graduate students. The university follows a quarter system, except for the School of Law, which uses semesters.
Undergraduates study in the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering or the Leavey School of Business, and can choose from more than 50 majors, minors and programmes. At graduate level SCU offers degrees in law, business, engineering, counselling psychology, education, pastoral ministries and theology, as well as online programmes through Santa Clara Online.
Undergraduates are admitted as full-time, degree-seeking students only. International applicants apply through the Common Application, submit a financial resource statement and must show English proficiency (for example IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 120); SAT and ACT scores are not required. SCU competes in 19 intercollegiate sports in NCAA Division I.

International first-year applicants (non-US citizens on a non-immigrant visa) submit:
- The Common Application
- Official high school transcripts from grade nine onwards, with an English translation if needed
- One academic teacher evaluation and the secondary school report form
- A $75 non-refundable application fee
- Proof of English proficiency
- The SCU Financial Resource Statement
SAT or ACT scores are optional. Transfer applicants with university study abroad also need a course-by-course evaluation by WES. Optional interviews through InitialView or Vericant are accepted.
All international applicants must show English proficiency, either through four years at a school where English was the sole language of instruction or with one current test score:
- IELTS 6.5
- TOEFL iBT 90 (tests before 21 January 2026) or 4.5 on the new scale (after 21 January 2026)
- Duolingo English Test 120
- SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 630
- ACT Reading 27 and ACT English 27
Scores are valid for two years. MyBest scores, TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition and TOEFL Essentials are not accepted.
