Shanghai Normal University (SHNU) is a comprehensive university in Shanghai, China, with particular strengths in the humanities and teacher education, which also covers sciences, engineering and the arts. It was founded in 1954 as a teacher-training college, became an undergraduate institution in 1956 and took its present name in 1984. It has awarded master's degrees since 1981 and doctorates since 1986. The university is one of the institutions given priority development by the Shanghai municipality, and since 2021 it has been part of Shanghai's programme for high-level local universities.
SHNU has two campuses, Xuhui (100 Guilin Road) and Fengxian (100 Haisi Road). According to the university, it has more than 20,000 full-time undergraduates, more than 10,000 postgraduate students, over 15,000 students in adult education and more than 1,000 international students.
