Smith College is a liberal arts college for women in Northampton, Massachusetts, in the United States, founded in 1871. Its undergraduate students come from 66 countries. The curriculum is built on the humanities, arts and sciences, with majors or interdepartmental programmes that also include engineering, neuroscience, film and media studies, the study of women and gender, Middle East studies, and statistical and data sciences. Smith also admits graduate students and older students through its Ada Comstock Scholar programme, and every student has access to internship funding through the Praxis programme.

Students do not live in traditional dormitories but in one of 40 self-governing houses that mix all four class years, and most live on campus throughout their studies. Smith awards need-based financial aid to non-U.S. citizens, both first-year and transfer applicants, and undergraduate aid packages contain grants rather than loans, also for international students who meet the deadlines. Admission has been test-optional since 2009.

More information about Academic Programs

Smith's undergraduate curriculum covers the humanities, arts and sciences in the liberal arts tradition. Majors or interdepartmental programmes include:

  • Engineering
  • Neuroscience
  • Statistical and data sciences
  • Film and media studies
  • The study of women and gender
  • Middle East studies

Students can combine majors, minors and concentrations, for example sociology with landscape studies, or computer science with psychology.

Admission Requirements

Smith bases admission on the applicant's transcript, recommendations, essay and extracurricular activities; it has been test-optional since 2009. The college recommends that applicants take the highest-level courses their school offers, ideally including:

  • Four years of English composition and literature
  • Three years of a foreign language (or two years each of two languages)
  • Three years of mathematics and three years of lab science
  • Two years of history

International students who want financial aid must apply for it before they are admitted.

Fees

Cost of attendance for the 2026-27 academic year (US$):

  • Tuition: $70,460
  • Food and housing: $24,520
  • Student activities fee: $308
  • Health insurance: $4,030

Half of the annual charges is billed at the start of each semester. Smith estimates transportation for international students at $1,000 on average.

Financial Aid

Smith awards need-based aid to non-U.S. citizens, both first-year and transfer applicants. The international pool is highly competitive and the amount of support varies with family circumstances. Undergraduate aid packages contain grants instead of loans, also for students on a student visa, and an international student's expected family contribution stays the same each year.

International students must apply for aid before admission; otherwise they can never receive institutional aid. For 2027-28 entry, the CSS Profile (Smith code 3762) and translated parent tax documents are due by 15 November (Early Decision I), 6 January (Early Decision II) or 25 January (Regular Decision).

Housing

Smith students live in one of 40 self-governing houses rather than traditional dormitories. Houses hold from about 10 to 100 students of all four class years, with single, double and occasionally triple rooms and a shared living room. Most students live on campus for their whole degree, and the houses keep traditions such as Friday afternoon tea.
