Universidad Americana (UAM)

The Universidad Americana (UAM) is an independent university in Managua, Nicaragua. It was founded in 1992 by a group of university lecturers and officially approved by the Consejo Nacional de Universidades (CNU) on 26 November 1992. UAM describes itself as a bilingual university: all degree programmes include six levels of English, and new students take an English placement test.

UAM offers 19 undergraduate degree programmes in six faculties and a language centre, plus postgraduate and continuing education:

  • Medicine, psychology, nutrition and dentistry
  • Business, accounting and finance, economics and international business
  • Marketing, design and communication
  • Architecture and engineering
  • Law and diplomacy and international relations
  • Doctorates in Law and Education, master's programmes, dental specialties and diplomados

All students complete professional internships, and from the second year students with an average of at least 80 can add a second degree. Partial academic, sports and cultural scholarships are available. International students can take summer courses taught in English, with credits, in mathematics, history, social sciences and business. Foreign applicants must have their documents authenticated by the consulate of the issuing country.

  • Dentistry
  • Marketing, Design and Communication: Marketing and Advertising, Design and Visual Communication, Communication and Public Relations
  • Business and Economics: Business Administration, Accounting and Finance, Business Economics, International Business
  • Engineering and Architecture: Architecture, Civil, Industrial and Information Systems Engineering
  • Law, Humanities and International Relations: Law, Diplomacy and International Relations

UAM College and a Language Center complete the offer.

Graduate programmes

  • Doctorates in Law and in Education
  • Master's programmes in business and finance (e.g. Executive MBA, Corporate Finance, Forensic Auditing), engineering (structural, geotechnical, hydro-sanitary), digital marketing and law (corporate, environmental, international taxation)
  • Dental specialties: endodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics, periodontics and implantology, advanced oral rehabilitation
  • Diplomados and short courses in management, law, communication, engineering and health

Admission

Applicants complete an enrolment form and a payment commitment letter and submit:

  • Certified original grades for the fourth and fifth years of secondary school
  • MINED secondary school diploma
  • Passport-size photo and identity document of the student and parent or guardian
  • Birth certificate (Nicaraguan students only)

Documents issued abroad must be authenticated by the consulate of the issuing country. Medicine and dentistry require a minimum average of 90 and psychology 80, plus an aptitude test and interview. New students take an induction course and an English placement test.

Scholarships and financial aid

UAM offers partial scholarships of three types: academic, sports and cultural. Applicants need a minimum average of 80%. Students with an average of at least 80 can also add a second degree from their second year, with common subjects recognised for both.
