University, Graduate school in Beira-Sofala, Mozambique
The Universidade Católica de Moçambique (UCM, Catholic University of Mozambique) is a private, non-profit university of the Mozambican Episcopal Conference, with its headquarters in Beira, Sofala province. It was officially founded in 1995 and opened in August 1996 with a Faculty of Economics and Management in Beira and a Faculty of Law in Nampula. According to the university, it was one of the first private universities in Mozambique and the first based outside Maputo.
UCM has faculties and branches in many parts of the country, including Beira, Nampula, Cuamba, Pemba, Quelimane, Tete, Chimoio, Lichinga and Maputo. Programmes include bachelor's degrees (licenciaturas), master's degrees and a doctorate, for example:
- Law, accounting and auditing, economics and management, human resources and business administration
- Information technology, architecture and port management
- Health sciences, engineering, agricultural sciences and social and political sciences
- Master's degrees including an MBA, and a doctorate in business management
The Institute of Distance Education (IED) offers teacher-training and other bachelor's degrees in a blended format, combining the Moodle virtual learning platform with face-to-face sessions; enrolled students receive a laptop. UCM also runs research and consultancy centres in most provinces where it operates, and has an academic mobility programme.
