The Université d'Artois is a multidisciplinary university in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais area of northern France, founded in 1992. It has about 12,500 students on five campuses: Arras, Béthune, Douai, Lens and Liévin. It comprises eight faculties (UFR), two IUTs (university institutes of technology), an engineering school and a continuing education service.
Programmes range from the bachelor's degree (licence) to the doctorate in these fields:
- Humanities: literature, performing arts, languages, history and geography
- Law, economics and business management
- Science and technology: mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry, biology and several branches of engineering
- Sport and physical activity sciences
Work-study (alternance), continuing and distance education are also offered. International students can come on Erasmus+ exchanges, bilateral agreements or double degrees, or enrol directly in a programme. Most courses are taught in French. Exchange students can be offered rooms in university residences, and student tutors on each campus help international students with formalities. The university's language centre prepares certifications such as the DELE, and it hosts a Confucius Institute.

There are two routes for international students. Students applying individually for a degree face admission conditions that depend on nationality, country of residence, school-leaving diploma and the programme; those who accept an offer through the Études en France platform are then told how to enrol. Exchange students (Erasmus+, bilateral agreements, double degrees) must be selected and nominated by their home university.
For exchange stays in 2026/2027, nominations are due by 15 May for the first semester (September to December) and by 15 October for the second semester (January to May/June). The complete application (online form and supporting documents) must reach the international relations office by 31 May or 31 October respectively.
Most courses are taught in French. Exchange students generally need French at CEFR level B1 or B2, depending on the discipline and the agreement with their home university, shown by a signed statement from the home institution or an official certificate such as DELF, DALF, TEF or TCF.
Exchange students (except short stays) can be offered a room in a university residence near the campus; places are limited and rents range from €270 to €400 a month. Private landlords also offer furnished rooms, flats and studios for €350 to €500 a month; the international relations office sends the list on request. Late applications do not guarantee housing. On arrival, exchange students are met at the station by a student buddy.
