University of KwaZulu-Natal

University, Graduate school in Durban, South Africa

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is a research-led university in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. It was formed on 1 January 2004 through the merger of the University of Durban-Westville and the University of Natal, whose roots go back to the Natal University College, founded in Pietermaritzburg in 1910. UKZN has five campuses, including Westville, Howard College and Pietermaritzburg, as well as a Medical School.

The university offers bachelor's, honours, postgraduate diploma, master's and doctoral programmes. The College of Law and Management Studies, for example, groups three schools:

  • School of Commerce
  • Graduate School of Business and Leadership
  • School of Law (LLB and LLM)

All applications are made online. International applicants, both undergraduate and postgraduate, apply through the same online system as returning and local postgraduate students; applications for 2027 are open, and closing dates for postgraduate programmes vary. The university has student residences on its campuses, with a residence life team and an orientation programme for first-year students.
