University of Ruhuna
University, Graduate school in Matara, Sri Lanka
The University of Ruhuna is a university in Matara, in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. It was established by special presidential decree in 1978 as Ruhuna University College and became a full university in 1984; according to the university, it is the sixth oldest university in Sri Lanka and the only one in the country's southern region. Its campus buildings were designed under the direction of the architect Geoffrey Bawa.
The university has ten faculties on three sites:
- Wellamadama, near Matara (central campus): Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management and Finance, Fisheries and Marine Sciences & Technology
- Kamburupitiya: Agriculture and Technology
- Galle: Engineering, Medicine and Allied Health Sciences
- Faculty of Graduate Studies, which manages all postgraduate programmes
Postgraduate study includes research degrees (PhD, MPhil and MA) and taught master's programmes such as Green Technology, Agricultural Economics and Development, Development Planning and Structural Engineering. The university also runs distance and continuing education programmes and has a Centre for International Affairs. Student hostel enquiries are handled through the university's online services.
