The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Jamaica), formerly the College of Arts, Science and Technology, is a university focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). It began in 1958 as the Jamaica Institute of Technology and became a degree-granting institution in 1986. Its main campus, about 18.2 hectares, is in Papine, in the parish of St. Andrew in the Greater Kingston area, east of the Hope Botanical Gardens; there is also a Western Campus.
Programmes range from professional courses and associate degrees to bachelor's and postgraduate degrees, organised in colleges and faculties:
- Business and Management; Health Sciences
- Education and Liberal Studies; Law
- Engineering and Computing; Science and Sport
- The Built Environment, including the Caribbean School of Architecture
- Medicine, Oral Health and Veterinary Sciences
- UTech Open, the School of Lifelong Learning and Professional Development
Teaching follows the English polytechnic model, with work-based learning and full-time, part-time and cooperative study modes, plus a summer session from mid-May to August. Some programmes are also delivered through community colleges. Applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirements can be assessed through Prior Learning Assessment. The International Students' Office helps international students with registration, accommodation, sponsorship and immigration matters, and scholarships and financial aid are available.
