The University of Derby describes itself as an applied university in the heart of the UK. Its main campus is in Derby, with a second campus in Chesterfield; University of Derby - Buxton, part of the same group, offers further education and university-level courses. According to the university, it has more than 2,000 international students from over 100 countries, and it was awarded Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023.

The International Foundation Programme introduces international students to university-level study in the UK and gives them a recognised English language qualification. International students can choose between three accommodation offers across seven halls, and arrive to a room with a bed, kitchen and arrival pack. Undergraduate study at Derby covers BA, BSc and BEng degree courses, taught in Derby and Chesterfield. International students can enter through several routes:

Postgraduate taught courses include MA, MSc and MBA degrees, among them the MBA Global and the MSc Sustainable and Ethical Business Management and MSc Conservation Biology. Research degrees lead to a PhD or MPhil. Recent Derby graduates can receive up to 25% off postgraduate fees.

Admission Requirements

The university publishes, country by country, the international qualifications it accepts for its International Foundation Programme, Foundation Pathway Programme, undergraduate degrees with a foundation year and direct undergraduate entry. For postgraduate taught courses the usual requirement is the equivalent of a UK second-class honours degree, lower division (2:2). Applicants who need a visa receive a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies); a deposit of £8,000 towards tuition fees secures the place.

Language Requirements

Students whose first language is not English need an English language qualification to study at Derby; the level required depends on the course and is given on each course page. The International Foundation Programme develops academic English and leads to a recognised English language qualification.

Fees

Annual tuition fees for international students in the 2026-27 academic year, before scholarships or discounts:

  • Foundation: £15,500
  • Undergraduate: £17,500
  • Postgraduate: £17,500
  • MBA Global and Global Finance: £18,000

Some course fees vary. A deposit of £8,000 is paid to secure a place, and the rest in two instalments.

Financial Aid

International students can combine several scholarships and discounts, applying once they have an offer for a full-time degree:

  • European Scholarship: £6,000 a year for the whole course, for EU/EEA and Swiss nationals paying international fees and starting in September 2026, January 2027 or September 2027
  • Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship: £2,000 off first-year fees for self-funded students starting in April 2026, September 2026 or January 2027
  • Full Payment Discount: £1,000 for paying the annual fee in full before enrolment
  • Alumni discount for Derby graduates on postgraduate courses
  • Sports Scholarships

The European Scholarship cannot be combined with other University of Derby scholarships.

Housing

The university's halls of residence are run by its Student Living team, with a Residence Life Programme of free and subsidised activities. International students arrive to a room with a bed, kitchen and arrival pack, and halls have 24-hour security. There are three accommodation offers across seven halls, plus dedicated postgraduate accommodation a few minutes from campus. For 2026-27, premium standard rooms cost £128.59 a week (typical 42-week contract). For private renting, the university runs an accredited landlord scheme.
