Wilkes University is a private university in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, a city of about 40,000 people, founded in 1933. It describes itself as offering the opportunities of a large university with the close mentoring of a small college, and has a 13:1 student-to-faculty ratio. Undergraduates do not need to declare a major until the start of their junior year.
Wilkes offers more than 100 programmes, from accounting, biology, computer science, criminology and engineering (civil, computer, electrical, bioengineering) to communication, digital design, nursing and pharmacy at the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy. Graduate programmes include the MBA, education (including an EdD), nursing up to the Doctor of Nursing Practice, and an MA/MFA in creative writing, several of them online.
The Office of Global Engagement supports international students and helps them obtain the I-20. Students who need to improve their English can join the Intensive English Program, a UCIEP member. International first-year students receive merit scholarships of US$22,000 to US$29,000 a year at admission, and there is no application fee for undergraduates.
