Language Immersion Courses in Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver is one of Canada's main destinations for English courses. Students come for a few weeks of general English, for IELTS or CELPIP preparation, for a pathway into a Canadian college or university, or to combine English with a career programme.

Many private language schools in Canada are members of Languages Canada, the national language education association, which represents more than 160 accredited language programmes in public and private institutions across nine provinces. In September 2026 the association published support information for students of EC English and ILAC after those schools closed in Canada, a reminder to check a school's status before you pay.

What the language schools in Vancouver offer

Course formats vary by school, but most offer:

  • General English at several levels, part-time or full-time
  • Exam preparation for IELTS, CELPIP or TOEFL
  • Academic English and university or college pathway programmes
  • Business English and English for specific jobs
  • Co-op diplomas that combine study with a work placement
  • Teacher training (TESOL) and junior or summer programmes

Some examples from our list. The Canadian College of English Language (CCEL), which marks 35 years, teaches with Smrt, a web-based curriculum written by its own instructors, in part-time (18 lessons a week), full-time (28) and intensive (38) formats, and offers IELTS and CELPIP preparation and a university pathway that does not require a TOEFL or IELTS score. VanWest College, a Canadian-owned college with a downtown Vancouver campus and a second one in Kelowna, combines English courses such as VanExpress IELTS Preparation and English for Flight Attendants with co-op diplomas, for example in supply chain management. Pera College, in North Vancouver, describes itself as an international language and fine arts school; it offers IELTS and TOEFL preparation and states that students who do not reach 6.5 on IELTS or 88 on TOEFL iBT can keep studying for free until they pass. ATC (Advanced College of Languages and Training Canada) trains English teachers, with online TESOL diplomas of 120 to 180 hours. The website listed for CSLI now leads to LCI Language School Vancouver, whose campus is steps from Renfrew SkyTrain station.

Costs

Course prices are set by each school and depend on the number of lessons per week and the length of the course, so ask for a current quote. Accommodation is often the largest cost. LCI Language School's 2026 price list gives a homestay room without meals at C$280 a week and a private room with full board at C$365, plus a summer fee of C$25 a week from June to August; the average commute from a homestay is 35 to 60 minutes by public transit. CCEL's homestay plans include two meals a day on weekdays and three at weekends, and the school also has a student residence on Robson Street, a 15-minute walk from its campus.

TransLink fares depend on the number of zones. A one-zone adult trip with a Compass Card costs C$2.85 and an adult one-zone monthly pass costs C$117.20. Concession fares are for young people aged 13 to 18 and seniors, so most adult language students pay adult fares.

Visa and study permit

Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). To get one, you must be enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI) and prove you can pay for tuition and living costs; the fee is C$150. Several schools publish their DLI number (CCEL: 019352470312; VanWest Vancouver: O19283891072). Check IRCC's rules for your course length before you book.

Practical tips

  • Check whether the school is a member of Languages Canada and, if you need a study permit, whether it is a DLI
  • Take the school's placement test before you choose a course level
  • Compare the total cost: tuition, application and material fees, accommodation and transport
  • Trips that start at the airport (YVR) carry a C$6.50 AddFare; a single fare is valid for 90 minutes on bus, SkyTrain and SeaBus
