Studies & Degrees in Commercial Management

Commercial management, dirección comercial in Spanish, is the part of business studies that deals with selling: setting sales targets, organising and leading a sales team, managing key customers and deciding through which channels a company reaches its market. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes the core of the job this way: sales managers set sales goals, analyse data and develop training programmes for the organisation's sales representatives.

The subject sits next to marketing, and many programmes combine the two. Marketing studies the market and the offer; commercial management turns that into a sales plan, a team and results. Most schools in this category are in Spain, where the subject is taught at vocational, bachelor's and master's level.

What students learn

Typical contents are market research and sales forecasting, the sales plan, organisation and management of the sales force, negotiation, key account management, e-commerce and omnichannel strategy, and the use of customer data. The Máster en Dirección Comercial y Ventas at EAE Business School, for example, includes modules on market research and sales forecasting, omnichannel and e-commerce strategies, and leadership and negotiation for sales directors. Spain's official vocational curriculum for sales management asks students to define commercial strategies, manage the sales force and draw up the sales plan.

Qualifications and levels

  • Vocational training (FP) in Spain. The Comercio y Marketing professional family has two relevant qualifications of 2,000 hours each: Técnico en Actividades Comerciales (grado medio) and Técnico Superior en Gestión de Ventas y Espacios Comerciales (grado superior). The official careers listed for the second one include sales manager, sales representative, commercial agent and store manager.
  • Bachelor's degree (grado). Official bachelor's degrees in Spain have 240 ECTS credits. The Universitat Abat Oliba CEU in Barcelona offers a Grado en Marketing y Dirección Comercial of 4 years and 240 ECTS, with compulsory work placements in the final year.
  • Master's degree. Official university master's degrees in Spain have 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits. Many master's programmes in this field are the schools' own qualifications. EAE Business School states that its Máster en Dirección Comercial y Ventas (60 ECTS, in Spanish, 12 months at weekends in Madrid) is a título propio of EAE and the Universidad Internacional de la Empresa (UNIE). EFEM Escuela de Formación Empresarial offers an online Master en Dirección Comercial y Marketing of 12 months and 600 teaching hours, with a qualification issued by the school.
  • Short courses. Specialised centres such as Formanet in Badalona teach sales courses for working professionals and companies.

Before enrolling, ask the school what recognition its qualification has. This matters if you want to continue to a doctorate, apply for public-sector jobs or have the qualification recognised in another country.

Where to study

SpainExchange lists 31 active schools for commercial management. Spain has 25, and Italy, Mexico, Peru, the United States, Denmark and France have one each. In Spain the list includes the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU, Universidad CEU San Pablo, Universidad Europea de Madrid, Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio, Universidad Camilo José Cela, Florida Universitària, IE Business School, EAE Business School, EUDE, ESDEN Business School, CESTE, CEU FP Madrid and EFEM. Abroad it includes the Universidad del Pacífico in Lima, the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico and VIA University College in Denmark.

Most programmes in Spain are taught in Spanish. Part-time, weekend and online formats are common at master's level, because many students already work in sales.

Admission

For the higher vocational qualification, Spain asks for the Bachiller certificate, another vocational qualification or an entrance test. Master's programmes normally ask for a university degree, and some also ask for experience: EAE requires a previous university degree, preferably in economics, business or marketing, and at least 2 years of work experience for its Máster en Dirección Comercial y Ventas. Students with foreign qualifications should check with the school which documents it needs.

Careers

Typical roles are sales representative, key account manager, sales manager, trade marketing manager and commercial director. The Universitat Abat Oliba CEU lists marketing and sales departments, commercial management and consultancy, and marketing and advertising agencies as fields for its graduates. Management positions usually come after some years in sales: according to the BLS, sales managers typically need a bachelor's degree and work experience as a sales representative. In the United States, sales managers held about 650,100 jobs in 2025, and the BLS projects employment to grow 4 percent from 2025 to 2035.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between commercial management and marketing?

Marketing analyses the market and shapes the offer and its communication. Commercial management organises the sale itself: targets, the sales team, customers and channels. Many degrees, such as the Grado en Marketing y Dirección Comercial at the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU, cover both.

Can I study commercial management without going to university?

Yes. In Spain, the Técnico Superior en Gestión de Ventas y Espacios Comerciales is a higher vocational qualification of 2,000 hours whose listed careers include sales manager and commercial agent.

Do I need work experience for a master's in commercial management?

It depends on the school. EAE Business School asks for at least 2 years of work experience for its Máster en Dirección Comercial y Ventas; other programmes admit recent graduates.

Is a master's in commercial management an official degree?

Not always. EAE Business School, for example, states that its master's is a título propio. Ask each school which qualification it awards and what recognition it has.
