CELA Spanish School (Centro de Lingüística Aplicada) was founded in 1997 by Dr. Sabine Löffler on Margarita Island, Venezuela, where it first ran total-immersion Spanish courses. Since 2017 it has taught Spanish exclusively online; it no longer offers courses on site. The courses are written by the school's director, who holds a PhD in Hispanic philology from UNED (Spain).

The core offer is a self-paced online course with tutor support at six levels, from A1 to C2:

  • 12 lessons per level, with grammar videos, reading, listening, pronunciation and writing exercises
  • Corrections and feedback from the teacher by email and WhatsApp
  • Optional live lessons by video conference for speaking practice
  • A course for teachers of Spanish as a foreign language

Students can start at any time and set their own pace; one level takes about 240 hours of work. The course covers both Latin American and Peninsular Spanish. Instructions are in English and German at A1-A2 and in English at B1; from B2 onwards the course is in Spanish only. A level certificate is issued after an oral evaluation by video conference. New students take a placement test, receive a free trial lesson and enrol by email.

Duration

Courses are self-paced, with no time limit. One level requires about 240 hours of work, so it can be completed in about 3 months at 20 hours a week; the school recommends at least 6 hours of study a week.
