The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan

Vocational school in Karachi, Pakistan

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP) is the statutory body established by the Government of Pakistan to regulate the accountancy profession. It was set up on 1 July 1961 under the Chartered Accountants Ordinance 1961 and awards the Chartered Accountancy qualification in Pakistan. ICAP is a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and has nearly 12,000 members in 60 countries.

ICAP is a professional body, not a university. Its students prepare for the Chartered Accountancy qualification through the Institute's examination system combined with practical training. The route includes:

  • Qualifying Assessment Test (QAT) and Pre-Requisite Competencies (PRC)
  • Certificate in Accounting and Finance (CAF)
  • Certificate Finance and Accounting Professional (CFAP), Multi Subject Assessment and Strategic Case Study
  • Courses in English communication skills, MS Office for Business and professional values and ethics

Students register either as full-time students or as trainees on probation, and holders of qualifications from bodies such as ACCA, CIMA or ICAEW can apply for exemptions. Beyond education, ICAP sets professional standards, reviews audit firms and works with the State Bank of Pakistan, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan and the Federal Board of Revenue. Its contact centre answers on 1227 within Pakistan and on +92 21 111 000 422 from abroad, Monday to Saturday.
