La Mariposa Spanish School & Eco-Hotel
Language school in La Concepción, Nicaragua
La Mariposa is a small Spanish school and eco-hotel in La Concepción (San Juan de la Concepción), in the department of Masaya, Nicaragua, about 45 minutes from Managua airport. It uses all of its profits to fund community and environmental projects and, according to the school, provides more than 40 local jobs plus homestays. Besides the main school building with open-air classrooms, it runs two nature reserves, La Reserva and Cañada Honda, the latter an official private nature reserve of over 140 acres.
Spanish is taught one to one, in person or online, with 20 hours of grammar and conversation classes per week from Monday to Friday. All levels are catered for, including children, and there are special programmes for university and high school groups. Some teachers do not speak English.
Weekly packages combine classes with accommodation in a hotel room with private bathroom, a bamboo eco-room or a homestay with a local family, three vegetarian meals a day, and either an afternoon and weekend activity programme (including Saturday trips) or organised volunteer work, for example in the organic garden, with rescued animals or in projects for children. Reservations are made by email, and no deposit is required for individuals.

Programmes

- Extra classes: 2 to 4 more hours per day (up to 30 or 40 hours per week), and weekend classes
- Online one-to-one lessons, available from 8:00 to 17:00 Nicaraguan time

- Classes on Nicaraguan history and cooking

Housing
Accommodation is part of La Mariposa's weekly packages:
- Hotel rooms with private bathroom, including a family room, cleaned six days a week
- Rustic bamboo eco-rooms (not suitable for children)
- Homestays with local families, most within walking distance, with breakfast, dinner and weekend meals at home
