Université Alassane Ouattara

University, Graduate school in Bouaké, Côte d'Ivoire

The Université Alassane Ouattara (UAO) is a university in Bouaké, Côte d'Ivoire. It was created in 1992 as the Centre universitaire de Bouaké and became an autonomous university, the Université de Bouaké, by a decree of November 1995. After the political and military crisis of 2002 it was relocated to Abidjan, and it returned to its campus in Bouaké in January 2012, when it took its current name.

Teaching is organised in training and research units (UFR) that cover, among other fields:

  • Law, administration and political science
  • Philosophy, sociology, history, geography and communication
  • Modern literature, English, German and Spanish
  • Economics and management
  • Medicine, pharmacy and odontostomatology
  • Mathematics and computer science, physics and chemistry, biosciences and earth sciences

Beyond first degrees, the university runs master's and doctoral programmes. It also hosts a UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, an American Corner, a Campus France office and its own radio station. Admission to first-year programmes is based on the series of the baccalauréat and minimum grades in specific subjects; separate procedures apply to Ivorian and foreign applicants, and registration fees differ for holders of a baccalauréat from outside the UEMOA area. The central registry (scolarité centrale) is at Ahougnassou, route de Béoumi, in Bouaké.
