The University of Guyana (UG) is the accredited national university of Guyana. It was founded in October 1963, three years before the country's independence. UG teaches through a system of eight campuses, including the Turkeyen campus, a second major campus at Tain in Berbice, the Makatau Forest Campus and the Institute for Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE). It has more than 11,500 students.
The university offers over 180 programmes in more than 80 disciplines, from certificates, diplomas and associate degrees to bachelor's, master's and PhD degrees, taught online, face to face or in blended formats. It has 9 faculties and 10 research institutes and centres. Main units include:
- College of Medical Sciences
- Faculty of Engineering and Technology
- Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry
- Faculty of Natural Sciences and Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences
- College of Behavioural Sciences and Research
- Faculties of Education and Humanities and of Social Sciences
- School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation
Since semester 2 of the 2024/2025 academic year, Guyanese students are state funded and tuition fees apply only to non-Guyanese students, who pay in US dollars. Students can live in the university's Halls of Residence.
