University, Graduate school in Depok, Indonesia
Universitas Indonesia (UI), known in English as the University of Indonesia, is a comprehensive university covering many disciplines, with a research-based approach to education. According to the university, its history began in 1849, during the Dutch colonial period. In 1947 the institution took the name Universiteit van Indonesië and was based in Jakarta, while some of its lecturers continued teaching in Yogyakarta, then the national capital; after the Dutch recognised Indonesian sovereignty in 1949, the university moved back to Jakarta.
Today UI has 17 faculties and also teaches vocational students. Its stated mission includes providing broad and fair access to quality education, and it organises research and innovation activities linked to the Sustainable Development Goals.
