Vilnius University
University, Graduate school in Vilnius, Lithuania
Vilnius University (VU) is a university in Vilnius, Lithuania, founded in the 16th century; the university describes itself as one of the oldest in Central and Eastern Europe. It was closed by the Russian Empire in 1832 and regained its autonomy in 1990, when Lithuania regained its independence. As of 1 October 2025 it had 26,553 students, 3,424 of them from abroad. Besides its sites in Vilnius, it teaches at its Kaunas Faculty and at the VU Šiauliai Academy.
International applicants can choose from more than 70 study programmes at bachelor's and integrated, master's and doctoral level, and exchange and visiting students can join for a short study period. Research ranges from the life sciences to artificial intelligence; the Centre for Physical Sciences and Technology and the Joint Life Sciences Centre stand side by side in Saulėtekis.
Admissions for the 2027-28 academic year open on 1 December 2026. Applicants from outside the EU/EFTA apply by 1 May, and EU/EFTA citizens by 1 July. The university has student dormitories, but places are limited and cannot be offered to every student. Scholarships and other financing options are available.

Deadlines
For the 2027-28 academic year, international admissions open on 1 December 2026. Application deadlines: 1 May for applicants from non-EU/EFTA countries; 1 July for citizens of EU/EFTA countries and for non-EU/EFTA applicants with an unused 90-day visa-free period.
Housing
Vilnius University has student dormitories in Vilnius and at the Šiauliai Academy, but places are very limited and not every student can be given one. Students apply for a place through the online admission procedure (degree students) or the online enrolment procedure (exchange students); those allocated a place pay a deposit and receive a moving-in schedule from the Accommodation Officer. Students of the Kaunas Faculty are offered rooms in dormitories of other educational institutions.
Students without a university place rent privately. The university publishes tips and links but does not arrange or book private accommodation, and it advises a formal rental contract with the owner's permission to declare residency at the address.
