Vytautas Magnus University (Vytauto Didžiojo universitetas, VMU) is a comprehensive university in Kaunas, Lithuania. Its history goes back to 1922, when the University of Lithuania was founded; it was renamed Vytautas Magnus University in 1930, closed by the Soviet government in 1950 and re-established in 1989. The main address is K. Donelaičio g. 58 in Kaunas.
VMU follows a liberal arts model: students build their own study plans, choose which subjects to take and when, and can add a certificate of parallel BA studies to their bachelor's major. The university offers:
- Bachelor's and integrated degree programmes
- Master's programmes
- Doctoral studies
- Exchange studies and Lithuanian studies for international students
- Courses in 30 modern and classical languages
VMU belongs to the Transform4Europe European university alliance and has Erasmus+ partners. About 100 research projects run in fields such as biotechnology, biophysics, technology law, education and computational linguistics. Students can live in three dormitories with more than 800 rooms. International applicants need English at B2 level; the autumn intake for 2027-28 opens at the beginning of November 2026, with studies provisionally starting on 23 August 2027. The university also hosts cultural events such as the International Kaunas Jazz Festival.

Admission
International applicants submit scanned copies of their documents and must meet general and programme-specific requirements and provide:
- Secondary school, bachelor's or master's diploma with supplement, with a minimum 60% grade average (lower or higher thresholds apply to some countries)
- Official English translation of documents not issued in English
- Proof of English at B2 level
- Motivation letter (1,200-3,000 characters) and CV in English
- Copy of passport and a recent photo
Language requirements
Applicants who are not native speakers and were not educated in English must prove English at B2 level with a recent certificate, for example TOEFL iBT 87-109, IELTS 5.5-6.5, Cambridge English First 161-180 or Duolingo 100-125. Applicants educated in English submit an official document from their school or university. VMU does not run English tests itself. Students who start at B2 level are expected to reach Academic English at C1 level.
