Language school in Playa Tamarindo, Costa Rica

WAYRA Instituto de Español is a Spanish language school in Playa Tamarindo, in the province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica, about 150 metres from the beach. It has taught Spanish to foreign students and residents since 1996, has been accredited by the Instituto Cervantes since 2008 and is a DELE examination centre. The school has 12 classrooms, all teachers are native Spanish speakers, and groups have a maximum of six students. Courses start every Monday, run from 1 to 40 weeks and cover all levels from A1 to C2.

Students can stay with a host family or in one of the school's student houses in Tamarindo (Casa WAYRA, Casa El Mar and Casa La Carolina). During the week the school organises activities such as beach volleyball and football, barbecues, sunset hikes and dance lessons, and it can arrange weekend trips.

All levels from A1 to C2, from 1 to 40 weeks, starting every Monday. Standard classes have 4 lessons a day, from 8:00 to 12:00 or from 13:00 to 17:00. A placement test and interview on the first day determine the level, and students receive an attendance and achievement certificate.

There are no special admission requirements.

2026 tuition rates, per person, VAT included:

Standard course (20 lessons per week): 1 week US$367, 2 weeks US$734, 3 weeks US$1,102, 4 weeks US$1,469, each additional week US$326
Intensive course (30 lessons per week): 1 week US$612, 2 weeks US$1,224, 3 weeks US$1,836, 4 weeks US$2,448, each additional week US$571

Prices include registration fee and placement test; books cost US$45. A non-refundable deposit of US$150 (US$250 if accommodation is booked through the school) is required.

Housing

WAYRA offers accommodation with host families and in its student houses in Playa Tamarindo:

Homestay: private room, breakfast, dinner, laundry service and morning transport to the school
Student houses Casa WAYRA, Casa El Mar and Casa La Carolina (with pool): shared or private room, with housekeeping

Check-in and check-out are on Sundays and lodging is booked by the week, from Sunday to Sunday; extra nights can be added.

Services and activities

We organize twice a week free activities such as Volleyball at the beach, BBQ at the student houses, Latin Dance Lessons etc. Many other activities like surfing, kayaking, canopy, horse back riding, sailing etc are available for a special student rate.
