Sports journalism, considered by most in the profession as the “toy department”. A means of easy living while bearing the title of a “journalist” which many consider as obscene since they think sports journalists shouldn’t even be called journalists at all. But who cares about what they think? Because for every born sports fanatic, it’s an opportunity to get up close and personal with the game and its players.

With the boom of pop culture, the commercialization of sports and its other aspects have grown into a lifestyle. Where in every news medium, from television to newspapers a section or a part of the program is solely devoted to sports. That now serves as a bible for all men, lovingly dubbed as the sport’s pages in every newspaper.

The aspect of this particular field is basically to create feature stories regarding a particular sport and its players. Almost everyone with a degree under the liberal arts can make it to the world of Sports Journalism ergo the nickname “toy department” by broadcasting institutions. The content of what exactly is one suppose to write is quite simple:

A. End of game score – The most important part of the journalist’s output. Because it obviously tells the readers who won.

B. Player production – points out who exactly was responsible for the outcome. Basically consists of the pivotal player’s point production. This is also where one can put in the game’s highlights such as; the game winning shot or the game saving block.

C. Summary – is simply a broad account of the game where one can put in about how exactly the game went. Scoring deficits and chases are usually edged in.

Once you got this formula down the rest is up to you of putting it up to the readers of what a great game they missed.

As one progresses in his career other opportunities may also rise. Such as becoming a game commentator, where obviously you’ll have front row seats to the game and put in your comments and knowledge regarding the game situation or player. Being one means putting in a lot of time for research, specifically on players and their skills that would greatly affect the game outcome. Of course knowing past situations from previous or historical games might also help in providing insight for the audience. Also you have to remember that the people who are unable to watch television or go to the venue would ultimately depend on you to tell them about what exactly is going on in the game.

Another position that one may be able to fill as a sports journalist would be as a sports analyst, whose job is to provide insights about upcoming matches and probable player output. For example, in Boxing it would be up to the analyst to observe the fighter’s conditioning before the game itself. One would also be required to provide insights regarding the tale of the tape such as height, weight, age, and arm reach -about how exactly would those factors affect the fight.

Of course the most fundamental job being a sports journalist would be as a writer. That would revolve writing about any chosen aspect of a particular sport. That would range from draft projections or right down to adding hype to an up-and-coming rookie. This particular aspect of the field may also be the most lucrative, because one would have the power of being able to make or break a player’s career. Just imagine all those players making an effort to get on your good side.
