The tragedy brought about by fire is indeed one of the worst things that could happen to anyone. Not only does it destroy properties in a snap but it could also claim lives in the harshest way possible. Because of this, safety standards have been set in such a way that fire is prevented in every possible way. However, because fire, now and again, still happens despite safety precautions, a course program called Fire Science and Technology was instituted just so to further the science of preventing, managing, controlling fire as well as creating underlying technology that goes with it.

In taking this course one should be prepared to the risks involved in this field as fighting fire would mean putting one’s life at risk as going into the thick of the fire to save lives and stop fires. Not only the mental preparedness of facing the fact that this is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world but one should also be ready on the physicality of what the job may entail. This physical fitness preparedness is a prerequisite for higher fire science modules. So it is imperative that one passes any cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength endurance, flexibility, agility tests that one may be subjected to. Physical fitness training for Fire Science students has three levels. First is basic physical fitness training and then the other two modules are advanced physical fitness preparedness lessons which may utilize C-PAT equipments. C-PAT is the standardized physical training approved by the IAFF or International Association of Fire Fighters.

After passing the battery of physical fitness subjects, the next things to be taught is basic fire prevention. Knowing what causes a fire and identification of conditions that causes this would be discussed in detail as well as corrective measures and cooperation abilities between fire departments and other branches of the government like the Office of the Mayor and disaster-related agencies.

Another important thing that will be broached on this course is hazardous materials awareness and operations. This is the part of the course where handling of hazardous materials especially in emergency situations is taught.

As with any battle, strategies and tactics are needed to be employed to totally douse out a fire. It is not just a simple directing of pressurized water hoses at a burning structure. This is one of the most important things that are needed to be learned by any students of Fire Science and Technology Students. Like some fires are complicated as it looks as there may be an adjacent gasoline station or hospital and that the primary steps is to not let the fire spread on that direction. This is also where utilization of available resources is thought as every fire is a unique situation.

Another important subject to be thought is disaster management. Earthquakes, floods, and storms all spell F-I-R-E if not planned ahead. All these natural calamities have always been a precursor to fires and so it is important that the students know what to do in case these natural calamities occur.

The course will also update students on the current technology available in combating fire and how to use them to their advantage. These technologies may be detection systems, extinguishing paraphernalia and other gadgets that will be operated by firemen.

Of course, as with every unit of the government, knowing the law is essential. Fire departments have been involved in legal proceedings over the years. Lawsuits are just as exhausting as any fire so if it can be avoided then understanding the Fire Service Law subject would really come in handy. As they say, ignorance is no excuse.

Opportunities for graduates of this course are not that many as being a fireman is perhaps the usual profession of those who finishes this course. Of course, once accepted by any fire bureau, there are always continuous learning programs that are offered. There are also private enterprises like oil rigs, power plants and other industrial plants that are in need of fire marshals.
