Studies & Degrees in Digital Communications
Digital Communications Study Programs
Digital communication is the study of how organisations, media and individuals create, publish and manage messages on digital channels: websites, social networks, video platforms, newsletters and apps. It sits between journalism, advertising, design and technology. A graduate is expected to plan a communication strategy, produce the content for it and measure the result.
The curriculum shows this mix. The bachelor's degree in Digital Communication (Grado en Comunicación Digital) at Universidad CEU San Pablo in Madrid combines basic subjects in writing, communication theory, photography and design with compulsory subjects such as web programming and development, user experience (UX), community and social media management, web analytics and data organisation, and e-commerce. At London Metropolitan University, the Digital Media BA trains students in technical, creative, production and marketing skills to initiate, design, produce and manage digital projects.
Qualifications and levels
- Bachelor's degree in Spain. Under Royal Decree 822/2021, a Spanish bachelor's degree (grado) has 240 ECTS credits, 60 per academic year, so it takes four years. The official degree at CEU San Pablo follows this pattern: 60 credits of basic training, 156 compulsory, 12 optional, 6 of external placement and a 6-credit final project. Related official degrees carry other names; Universidad Camilo José Cela, for example, teaches a four-year, 240-credit degree in audiovisual communication and new media, on campus and online, in Spanish and English.
- Bachelor's degree abroad. In the United Kingdom the subject is taught as a BA (Hons), such as Digital Media at London Metropolitan University.
- Master's degree. Official master's degrees in Spain have 60, 90 or 120 credits. Specialised schools add their own programmes: the Escuela de Unidad Editorial in Madrid lists master's programmes in journalism with new digital tools and in publishing management and digital marketing. In Sweden, Uppsala University offers a two-year, 120-credit Master's Programme in Digital Media and Society, taught in English, which leads to a Master of Social Science in media and communication studies.
- Short courses. Business schools and training centres teach shorter programmes in social media, content and digital marketing, which end with the school's own certificate.
Admission and language
For a bachelor's degree in Spain, students with foreign school qualifications normally go through UNEDasiss, the service of the UNED that evaluates the academic records of international students and runs the tests needed for access to Spanish universities; each university then applies its own admission criteria. CEU San Pablo offers 90 places on its degree and teaches it in Spanish and English.
Abroad, requirements follow national rules. London Metropolitan University asks for a minimum of grades BBC in three A levels or 112 UCAS points for its Digital Media BA. Uppsala University requires a bachelor's degree with a main field in the social sciences or humanities relevant to media and communication, and proof of English.
Where to study digital communication
SpainExchange lists 20 active schools for this subject. Eleven are in Spain, three in the United States and two in the United Kingdom; Germany, India, Sweden and Thailand have one each. In Spain most are in Madrid and Barcelona, and they include universities such as Universidad CEU San Pablo, Universidad Camilo José Cela, Universitat Abat Oliba CEU, Universidad de Alcalá and Universidad Miguel Hernández, and business schools such as ESEI International Business School and IMF Business School.
Points to compare are the language of instruction, whether the qualification is an official degree or the school's own, the balance between technical subjects (web, data, UX) and editorial ones, and the placements on offer.
Costs
Fees depend on the type of institution. As an example from a private university, CEU San Pablo publishes an annual price for the 2026-27 academic year of €11,100 for the Spanish track and €12,360 for the English track of its degree, for 60 ECTS credits, plus an enrolment fee of €1,500. Public universities charge the regulated fees of their region.
Careers
Graduates work in companies, agencies, media and start-ups. CEU San Pablo lists roles such as community manager and social media manager, digital communication and online reputation strategist, multimedia content producer and audience metrics analyst.
For the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects little or no change in overall employment in media and communication occupations from 2025 to 2035, with about 88,500 openings a year, largely to replace workers who leave. The figure covers the whole group, from public relations specialists to writers, not digital roles alone.
