Mass communication is involved in the transferring of a message to a large group of people. Mass communication is used with the purpose of reaching large consumer audiences, and is the opposite of niche marketing, where a certain group of people is targeted. Usually mass communication employs newspapers, television, internet, magazines, etc. to pass information and adverts to a wide range of people.

Mass communication is a vast field that opens up many career paths, one of which is working for an advertising agency. This can be quite an interesting experience, as you would decide on the most appropriate message to create and convey to a whole country or even a larger region. Journalists are involved in mass communication, too, preparing news and material for all types of communication channels. Public relations professionals are another example of people involved in this field, establishing the contact between large companies and the public and media.

Personal Qualities

As can be guessed from the name itself, great communication skills are required to pursue a career in mass communication. Other useful qualities include:

  • Exceptional organizational qualities
  • Creativity and originality in ideas
  • Interpersonal skills and high level of emotional intelligence
  • Flexibility
  • Curious and exploring nature

Study Options

A bachelor of communication degree would be a good choice for you if you wish to be involved in mass communication, and it would definitely prepare you for the careers mentioned earlier – marketing, public relations, and journalism. You should keep in mind that entrance into such degrees is often very competitive, and it is likely that you would have to demonstrate proof that you are suitable with relevant extracurricular activities. Examples are participating in different debate clubs, writing for the school newspaper, or being part of the yearbook team.

You should also consider your future development, and studying at a university in a large city would be more appropriate for this kind of a degree. It would definitely give you better access to internships in large corporations, local radio or TV stations, and therefore provide you with a real sense and experience of what a career in mass communication looks like.

Career Options

Because of the broadness of the subject area, you should be able to venture into many career fields, including politics, law, journalism, public relations, and marketing. Aside from the opportunities already discussed, such a degree would also equip you with the skills to write speeches, and if you have talent, perseverance, and good luck, you could participate in writing the public speeches of an important figure in society. Another interesting option we have not yet discussed is brand creation – the development of a brand for a certain company is highly dependent on communications specialists, and your ability to think creatively, while also playing with words, can get you some very well-paid jobs. Finally, you can also consider opening your own agency or working on a freelance basis for a wider range of companies needing this type of service.
